Bodies of Experience: Stories about living with HIV, was an exhibition commission through Camerawork and th Photo Co-op, 1989. Bringing together six photographic artists, the work considered the role of photography in the representation of HIV, in the context of conflicting and controversial messages in the press, from health education and the governmetn and other sources.

'There's no lecturing in Bodies of Experience and no milking of emotion, but no evasiveness either. There's space for the complex realities of HIV to come through, however much against the grain of our illusions; a chance to plot a personal relationship with the issues of HIV infection, whatever our previous experience or antibody status.'

Adam Mars-Jones, 1989.
