Thomas Neuman

German artist Thomas Neumann visited Vilnius, Lithuania in 2005.   Interested in the aspirations of young people following Lithuania’s accession to the European Union, Neumann’s work appropriates imagery from fashion and lifestyle magazines which seeks to suggest a collective dream of beauty and success for the young people of the country, while recorded interviews at times report a differing perspective.  The use of the rocket, a traditional symbol of progress and power, is appropriated here to suggest the exploration of new territories in post-Soviet Lithuania.

‘The Lithianian Rocket’ was exhibited in Lithuania at the Contemporary Art Information Centre in Vilunius and at Museum Folkwang, Germany.
