Slovakian photographer Andrej Balco undertook a commission in Brazil, hosted by the Universidade Federal Fluminense, Rio do Janeiro, as part of the Changing Faces project.
In Brazil, a land full of social contrasts, the service sector takes up two thirds of the entire labour market. Balco concentrated his investigation of work on the relationships between servant and master in the upper classes. The work, ‘Domesticas’, combines triptychs, which present portraits of employee and employer surrounding the shared domestic space, and environmental portraits of the workers.
Balco was awarded the 2009 Grand Prix at Lodz International Fotofestival for ‘Domesticas’ and has exhibited the work at Noorderlicht Festival and in France, Slovakia, Finland and Brazil.
