In 2007, Eija Keskinen was nominated by the University of Jyvaskykla, Finland to undertake a commission hosted by the University of the Witswatersrand in Johannesburg.
The body of work produced ‘La Anima Sola (Light)’ focuses on heavy construction in the Johannesburg township of Soweto, the lives of its inhabitants and their occupations such as street vendors and funeral directors. The work suggests a place of contrasts, depicting the harsh reality for families living on the streets and the construction of glossy luxury hotels on the outskirts of the modern city.
‘La Anima Sola’ has been exhibited in Finland and South Africa.
