Photography at its Best

If the photographic image makes you think, raises more questions than it answers, demands your attention, then this is the department for you. At the University of Sunderland, we have one of the best photography departments in the UK, based in our new city centre building, the Northern Centre of Photography, bringing together a range of expertise and interests in creating and understanding the photograph.

It may be that you are concerned with the craft of photographic production, it maybe that you want to challenge the world about you through the work you make, it may simply be that the process of photography causes you great pleasure and enjoyment, whatever your attraction to the subject, it is vital that you are committed to expanding and extending your knowledge and skills to enable you to grow and develop both as a practitioner and in your understanding of this complex form of communication.

Learning

The Photography department at the University of Sunderland provides students the opportunity to study photography at different levels. The BA (Hons) Photography, Video and Digital Imaging programme (click here for prospectus information) is for those who have not studied in higher education before or are new to Photography and lens-based media.

If you have a degree already, in a subject related to Photography, you might want to consider our MA Photography programme, either full-time or part-time, (click here to go to prospectus information) - an opportunity to really challenge and develop your practice in new ways. The course is designed to give you the time, the support and critical context to progress and challenge your practice through group seminars and self reflection.

If you already have a Masters, you may be interested in undertaking a PhD. For further information on PhD's in Photography click here

As a Department

The Photography Department at the University of Sunderland is pro-active in encouraging new ideas, approaches and research into the subject area. All staff are active researchers and practitioners in photography, (see staff research page for more information) and we run a number of projects (see Photography Research Projects for more information) bringing photographers to the region on commission or as part of our extensive visiting speaker programme.

Here are just a few of the visiting speakers at Sunderland -

Simon Norfolk, Helen Sear, Rosy Martin, John Davies, Peter Fryer, Paul Seawright, Liz Wells, Jem Southam, Tomoko Yoneda, Melanie Friend, Julian Germain, Paul Wombell, Dinu Li, Paul Hermann, Nicola Dove, Julian Stallabrass.

At Sunderland, we consider it very important that students at all levels hear photographers, curators, artists and funders talk about contemporary practice and their professional involvement in the field.
